Fight Holiday Bloat: Part 1

From Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day, we are bombarded with celebratory snacks and it’s hard to go too far without being offered up a plate of appetizers or a hefty portion of pie. Snacks are everywhere this time of year, and if you’re like most people, you will indulge a bit. Sometimes the overkill of snacks can leave you feeling full well into the new year, which is why we have put together a few proven tips to de-bloat yourself after the holiday binge.

Revise your thoughts on portions. Naturally, our portions tend to bloat as much as our waistlines during the holiday season, which is why it’s important to reset our ideas on portion sizes. Your goal is to feel full in a way that is comfortable and not detrimental to your health or your comfort. Instead of hitting the holiday buffet for seconds like you may have done over the past couple of months, allow yourself a single serving on an average size plate which would be around eight or nine inches in diameter.

Up your leafy greens. Dark, leafy greens, such as spinach, are one of the best things for your body and this proves true for downsizing your bloated tummy. Because they are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber, greens are key for every diet. And the best part is that you can stir- fry it with a variety of other items such as chicken, fish, bok choy, and kale. If you're partial to green smoothies, get your goodness by adding greens to some berries or an apple, and blend away.

Be mindful of alcohol. There is no shortage of opportunities to imbibe around the holidays, which will undoubtedly leave you feeling bloated. To reverse that effect, try to veer away from alcohol as you head into the new year. If you must, your best options are drinks that are low in sugar, such as vodka mixed with soda water. Keep in mind that the soda water may cause bubbling bloat in your belly and you can always opt for lemon water and vodka if you’re really serious about nixing the bloat. To avoid even more bloat while you set out into January, skip margaritas, beer, and anything from a punch bowl, as they contain unnecessary sugars and carbs.

Water. We emphasize this super unbeatable cure for bloat. It works wonders because it keeps your digestive system moving, it wards off constipation and keeps you hydrated. If you consumed alcoholic beverages throughout the holiday season, you will need even more water to tackle the dehydration and bloat. And if you want to take it up a notch, toss some lemons in your water, as they serve as a natural diuretic and can help lessen the amount of salt that your body retains.
