While we usually know that losing a few pounds will do us some good, it’s not always easy staying motivated during what can be a long weight loss process. Sometimes we start out being focused and excited about our journey ahead, but like most things in life, the motivation tends to dwindle over time. In order to keep that motivation going strong it helps to be crystal clear about your goals. Grab a pen and paper write down what you hope to accomplish and why you hope to accomplish it. Find a photo of yourself with the weight goal you would like to achieve, make it your phone screen saver, tape it to your bathroom mirror or put it in your wallet. If health is your main concern, write down some of your health woes that have resulted from weight gain. Then refresh your memory every single day by reading through the list so you stay on track. By being honest and up front, you are setting yourself up for a positive outcome.
Another way to ensure success and maintain motivation is to be realistic about your goals. It’s a good idea to start small then work your way up to a larger weight loss number. With this said, no need to set yourself up with an unrealistic weight goal, because you are just setting yourself up for failure. If you set out to lose a realistic amount of weight, then you are likely to see progress more quickly, which will serve as a motivation booster all by itself.
When you lose weight, you are likely to be on the receiving end of many different perks, and it will help to define these perks beforehand. If you want to be able to keep up with your grand-kids and stay healthy so you can watch them grow up, then that can be motivation for you to keep going after your goals. If you ever feel down in the dumps about your progress or find that your spark is fading, just think about how much better you will be able to keep up with the grand-babies that you cherish.
It always helps to have something to work toward, so be sure to reward yourself when you reach certain weight loss markers. Celebrate your success with a gift that you’ve been wanting. Maybe it’s a new article of clothing or a home appliance. As you work toward your weight loss goals, you will enhance your motivation by visualizing the item that you plan to reward yourself with. We all like to get something new, so why not earn it the old-fashioned way.
