Spring Clean your Cabinets: Getting Rid of the Winter Foods + Focusing on Healthier Options

Winter tends to be the most challenging time of year to maintain a healthy diet and a healthy weight, as we tend to fall victim to the cold weather that drives us to stay inside snuggled on the couch with a bag of chips. But, with spring right around the corner, there is no better time to rid your cabinets of the comfort foods that you’ve been relying on through the cold snap. While winter is packed with warm foods filled with unnecessary carbs and sugars, the nicer weather in the springtime has a tendency to make you crave healthier options. It’s the time of year when berries start to really bloom and considering you will be on the go more in the nicer weather, they are a perfect travel treat. Pack a small container of blueberries, raspberries or strawberries and snack on them while you’re outside absorbing the vitamin D.

Spring is the official start of the salad season, which means it’s time to toss the pasta and comfort foods out of your cabinets and fill your fridge with veggies instead. For a simple salad that will keep your energy levels up and your weight down, try a bowl of spinach topped with cucumbers and tomatoes. Add some chicken and top with lemon and garlic for some added flavor. Keep in mind that berries can always be added to salads, and they go hand in hand with the warmer weather. Fruits and veggies such as broccoli, strawberries, spinach, collard greens and asparagus are in season in March, April, and May, so now’s the time to get them while they’re fresh.

During the winter months we often rely on foods that are designed to make us wanting more, which is why it’s extremely important to rid your cabinets of anything that will tempt you. Don’t think twice before you toss out those packaged items that are filled with artificial flavors and added sugars, and focus on the fridge, because this is where the majority of your ingredients will be stashed. Have fresh cucumbers and apples sliced up and ready to go. Hard-boiled eggs are also a great go-to snack that will keep you feeling full for hours.

With the nicer weather around the corner, it’s time to make a change once and for all and rid your life of those foods that are packed with ingredients that store fat and do little for your motivation.
