How To Stay Healthy In the Golden Years

Ahhh…the golden years. Chances are you’ve been looking forward to punching your timesheet for the very last time and diving into a period in your life where you are free to come and go as you please, bookmarking your time with activities that interest you. There are a lot of pros to the golden years, as you will have a lot of time to spend with the grand-kids and participate in activities and hobbies that you’ve put off for years. But, what’s the point, if you don’t have a body that will allow you to enjoy any of these things? Here are a few tips for staying healthy in this life period that should be filled with joy and time…lots of it.

Embrace an active lifestyle. You have two choices…you can succumb to getting old by being sedentary and avoiding social connections and activities, or you can get out there and make things happen. If you’ve chosen the latter, then the first thing that you need to do, is choose an activity that will get you moving and bring you happiness. Maybe you played tennis in your youth and you want to see if you’ve still got it. The best part of aging in today’s world is that you have the ability to make connections in an instant, thanks to the technology that is more than likely at your fingertips. Go to your local rec center and get a list of classes dedicated to seniors. There are so many options these days, you are sure to find something that makes moving fun. And if you opt to walk for your exercise, maybe it’s time to find a group of like-minded walkers?

  2. Keep your mind sharp. Just like every other part of your body, the more you use your mind, the more efficient it becomes. One of the best ways to get your mind in gear is by taking up a new hobby or learning a new skill. Again, technology could come in handy for your mind project, as there are YouTube videos for every skill you can imagine. If you want to learn how to knit, simply tune into one of the many tutorials online.

  3. Stay hydrated. As you age, your body becomes more susceptible to dehydration due to a decline of bodily functions. The decrease in function results in an additional loss of body water, which makes it more important than ever to drink water regularly. In addition, elderly people tend to lack the sensation of thirst which leads them to skipping much needed sips. Be sure to always have a body of water handy, to keep things moving.
