Do Fad Diets Work? Part: 2

The Keto diet…does it really work?

In our previous post we discussed the pros and cons of one of today’s most popular diets. Now, it’s time to dive into another one of the hot eating fads that is so well known today. Keto.

Those who side with the keto diet say that it works by using the body’s system as a fat burning tool, helping participants lose weight in a short amount of time. Some have experienced a dramatic weight loss in as little as ten days, which can be quite intriguing for anyone who has ever attempted a weight loss plan.

While there is no doubt that the Keto diet will encourage weight loss if done properly, some critics believe that this way of tricking your system can be dangerous. The method behind the madness of the keto diet is when the body goes into a state of “ketosis.” When carbs are drastically restricted, there is a buildup of ketones in the bloodstream, causing the blood sugar levels to drop. From this point, the body begins to break down fat and use it as energy.

Keto Flu. Some participants of this restrictive diet have experienced great amounts of weight loss and some have even kept it off for more than a year. However; there is a lot you have to go through to get to the point of ketosis, and not everyone likes the side effects. When your body is making the transition into ketosis, you may experience what has been deemed as the “Keto Flu.” Nausea, headaches, fatigue, hunger, irritability, constipation, and brain fog are some of the symptoms that occur during this not-so-pleasant transition.

Maintenance. Not everyone can follow such a high-fat, low carb diet for a long period of time, and in most cases, participants end up feeling burnt out. This intense carb cutback has the potential to make some want to revert to their poor eating habits, making the lack of moderation a tough thing to get past.

Deficiencies. Whole food groups are excluded in the keto diet, which means that without proper guidance and supplementation, you could end up doing your body more damage than necessary. A wide variety of foods is something that benefits us, and the keto diet is very simplified, allowing only high fats and proteins, resulting in a lack of some much-needed nutrients.
