5 Signs You Have a Slow Metabolism

The word metabolism comes up often during weight loss conversations, and for good reason, as it is the process in which your body converts food and drink into energy. Without a metabolism, our bodies wouldn’t be able to carry out the tasks needed for us to survive, and while we all have different speeds at which our body converts food into fuel, there are a few telltale signs that will help you decipher if your metabolism is slower than normal.

  1. Sugar cravings. If you find yourself hankering for something sweet to give you a little lift, it could mean that your metabolism is slower than normal. The adrenal glands, which aid in regulating the rate at which stored fat is converted into energy, could be out of whack, causing your blood sugar levels to drop. Your body will crave sugar to make up for the deficiency.

  2. While tension in the head area can be the result of several different physical ailments, it is often associated with an underactive thyroid. Hypothyroidism has been known to slow down your metabolism.

  3. Difficulty concentrating. A slow metabolism can cause a lot of fog in the brain since it slows down the conversion of energy into brain function. This in turn will prevent the mental clarity that is needed to make healthy choices, leading us to binge on unnecessary calories.

  4. Hair loss. Much in the same way that your muscles need nutrients to rebuild, your hair thrives on this same supply of nutrients. If you find that your hair is dry and brittle or you are losing more than usual, it could be due to that lack of properly converted fuel.

  5. Dry, cracked skin. Metabolic deficiencies don’t just take a toll on your weight loss goals, but they are evident in the appearance of your skin as well. If your skin has more acne than normal, is dry or pale in appearance, or starts to show signs of cracking, then this could be indicative of a metabolic imbalance.

Although people oftentimes associate weight gain with a slow metabolism, looking for the symptoms listed above can help you confirm or rule out whether your metabolism is truly imbalanced.
